Probing is one of the most commonly used features in the manual section of CNC controls. Accurately and quickly locating your workpiece is key to producing quality parts efficiently. Let’s explore how probing works on a Sinumerik control.

What the Course Covers

Lesson 1: Getting to Know the Control Panel

The physical layout of the Sinumerik operator panel and machine control panel — what each area does and how the mode structure works before you touch anything else.

Lesson 2: Navigating the Sinumerik Interface

How the softkey system works, the main screen areas on Sinumerik One and 840D sl, and how to move between menus confidently without getting lost.

Lesson 3: Manual Operation — JOG Mode

The JOG interface is where most manual work happens on Sinumerik. Jogging axes, calling tools, executing M functions, and using the handwheel for precise manual positioning.

Lesson 4: Building Your Tool Library

Setting up the tool table, entering cutting tool length and radius offsets, and organising your tool data so the machine knows exactly what it’s working with.

Lesson 5: Workpiece Setup and Work Offsets

How G54–G59 work on Sinumerik, how to set your workpiece zero, and how the control interprets part position relative to the machine coordinate system.

Lesson 6: Probing for Accurate Setup

Using the touch probe to locate workpieces, set datums, and speed up setup — covering both the probe cycle interface and manual probing on Sinumerik One and 840D sl.

Lesson 7: Handling Alarms Confidently

Where alarms appear on the control, how to read the alarm text and number, and how to clear the most common ones without stopping production or calling for help.

Lesson 8: Running and Verifying Programs

Loading NC programs onto the control, running a simulation, executing a dry run, using feed hold and single block, and catching errors before they become scrapped parts.

Lesson 9: MDA Mode — Direct Command Input

How to run individual lines of NC code without a full program. Less common than JOG for everyday manual tasks, but useful to know when the situation calls for it.

Your instructor

I’m a researcher and lecturer at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, where my work focuses on machining and micromachining of hard and brittle materials. I teach CNC programming at the university level and co-run a spin-off developing next-generation cutting tools for industrial applications. I’ve spent years working directly with Sinumerik-controlled machines — this course is the structured introduction I wished existed when I started.
